BACKGROUND Below is an email sent to friends the end of February 2012. I was in the middle of my first set of treatments when I became quite ill in April. After 7 days in the hospital and 10 days in rehab, I returned home. Since I received negligent care from my first oncologist, I switched to Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center and Dr. Dragovich. Once I was fully recovered, I began new treatments of chemotherapy infusions. My first treatment was June 12 and the 2nd treatment was June 26. Unfortunately, I have been having a tough time. Subject: Zoe's New Adventure (Email sent February 23, 2012) Dear Friends: I have a new adventure facing me and this is the biggest one yet. I have recently been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It all started in November with what I thought was a stomach virus. In December I saw my internist and was diagnosed with diverticulitis and given antibiotics. I was told if I didn’t respond to see a gastroenterologist. That appointment was the end of January and he had me get more blood work and a CT scan. Unfortunately a malignant tumor was discovered on my pancreas so I was scheduled with an oncologist who scheduled a PET scan and then a needle biopsy. The good news is that it has not spread; the bad news is that due to location and the fact it is wrapped about a couple of important veins, it is inoperable. Because I am healthy, my oncologist feels I am a great candidate for radiation and chemotherapy which I will start the beginning of March (when my health care becomes effective). If successful, I have a great chance of living to the end of this year and, hopefully, longer. This has all happened very quickly so I ask your forgiveness for not calling personally. As soon as I am able, I will schedule trips to Seattle and Washington, DC and hope to see you. You have been an important part of my life and I want you to know how much your friendship means. I am currently on morphine which is very nicely controlling the pain. If you call and I do not answer I will get back to you as soon as possible. Hugs. Zoe Parsons
